Sengoku:

^ Click for full version
Genre: Beat 'em up
Meg Count: 55 MB
Players: 1 or 2 player
Released on: Home/MVS/CD
Brief Description:
One of SNK's earlier attempts at a side scrolling beat 'em up, Sengoku is an interesting title. In the game, you face an almost endless surge of undead soldiers from feudal Japan. The interesting part to this game is that after beating certain opponents and gaining their soul, you can change your character. Pressing the C button brings up a menu where you can cycle through and choose the one that you think suits the area you are on best.

So, let's discuss this game in detail. Have you played this game before or is it a title you have missed out on? Some would consider it a Neo Geo classic, but do you think that this and the majority of SNK's beat 'em ups on the Neo Geo are quite average? Also, do you own the cart/CD?

Well, I must admit the review I wrote of this game was not only poor, but I also didn't exactly heap praise on the game either. I know it does have its fans, but I never really liked it myself, but for the sake of the game of the week I won't say anything more in this thread before attempting to play through it again. I'll see how I like it this time around, but in all honesty I'm not expecting to suddenly love the game...

Having played this through emulation I've got to admit it didn't really impress me much at all and I don't want to have it in my collection. This is partly because the graphics are a bit primitive with some drab backgrounds and stiffly animated sprites. Having said that though it is an early Neo Geo game so you have to make allowances for that. The gameplay seems a little boring to me for some reason.
The sequel Sengoku 2 is far better with greatly improved graphics and gameplay. However Sengoku is certainly not a terrible game by any means and maybe if I give it another chance I could start to enjoy it a bit more.

Oh god, this is one of the two games I got together with my AES end to be honest that doesn't help to make my opinion about the game even the slightest more favorable :-) If the condition of this game were not as bad as they are now(seriously, my Sengokus box condition is the worst I've seen in my whole game collecting life, you must see to belive this!) I would sell it on the double but as it is now I wouldn't dare to even give it away. For Now I've hidden it in a shelf where it is hard to notice and pretend it isn't there.
It was a chore to get it working aswell, almost had to bathe the cartridge connectors in acetone!
Horrible game, the age does not excuse the gameplay ;-) |

Sengoku is one of those games i don't mind playing every now and then. I'll agree with the art though, it is very beautiful.

I don't have camera. But I can give a description:
The insert has been removed from the case some time, and then folded over and over again until the folded insert took up an area of 2x3 cm. THEN, someone cut out a few pieces of the insert with a pair of scissors(I shit you not!). And no, not like the faces or the like. Just a piece here and there all random.
Then they probably stored the insert that way a year or so untill they inserted it into the case again.
The Vinyl case itself is also in bad condition. They have probably stored it close to a radiator or other hot source since the vinyl has shrinked and crushed the thick papper in the case which makes it actually stand instead of just being a vinyl heap.
As it is right now i inserted the insert and then put two thick cardboard pieces in the back of the case to make i look straight when put in the shelf.
Manual? You shitting me? :-) The previous owner probably flushed it down the toilet.

I've not played this game, but I have played Sengoku 3. Judging by the fact that Sengoku 3 is an awsome game, should I really bother to play this game?

Welcome to the forums.
I agree with you that Sengoku 3 is an awesome game and so is Sengoku 2. When it comes to Sengoku I think it is worth giving it a try because some people really like this game. I am not really a fan of it myself but you never know you might like it. Obviously it is a lot older than Sengoku 3 so don't expect too much when it comes to graphics. If you haven't played Sengoku 2 either then I would highly recommend checking it out.

Thanks for the welcome. Someday I will get around to playing the first two. I've not played (and enjoyed) very many SNK beat 'em ups, any suggestions?

Welcome aboard LIFE_IN_2D!
I think the Sengoku is okay, but it's been bettered by it's 2 sequels. I highly recommend anyone new to the series checking out Sengoku 2 as it's much better. And it has far more ideas than Sengoku 3, which looks awesome but just doesn't hold my attention in the way that the second one does.
If it's a Neo scrolling beat 'em up you're after imo the best would have to be Sengoku 2, Robo Army, and the criminally over-looked Mutation Nation.

I'd agree with everything Shiny said pretty much. The only thing that I've never been a big fan of with SNK is their lack of truly great side scrolling beat em ups. Capcom have made so many great ones, whereas SNK's have generally been a bit average in comparison (Sengoku 3 is probably my fave by a fair way). The ones Shiny mentioned are decent though, in fact I have a feeling I should probably re-review those as I never gave them enough of a chance back when I originally revewed them years ago.
Welcome to the site anyways LIFE_IN_2D... love the sig btw

I like SoR for the atmosphere, but i like Battletoads because the enemies in those games tend to actually fight back alot. (also, you can't beat those fun vehicle sequences)

I don't really like the first Sengoku...I really like Beat 'em ups but I think this one is quite boring and...graphics are okay but nothing really special, everything looks like a cartboard cut out to me (the sprites are too flat looking, even for a 2D game).
