In The Hunt - Game of the Month
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Month!

This month we're going to take a look at quite a hidden gem closely related to one of SNK's most popular franchises. Some gamers who are familiar with the legendary Metal Slug series may already know that most Nazca employees who were responsible for the first Metal Slug from 1996 already worked at Irem a few years before. One of these games from the same team and that strikes an incredible resemblance to Metal Slug is In The Hunt from 1993. Jump in for some ridiculously detailed and intense pixel action from no less than the guys behind Metal Slug!

In The Hunt

i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x434/Murikov/NGFL%20GOTW/In%20The%20Hunt/inthehuntcover00_zpswaxc5hxv.png

Genre: Horizontal Shoot 'Em Up
Players: 2
Size: n/a
Released on: Arcade, PSX, SAT, PC

Brief Description:

In The Hunt is a horizontal scrolling shooter arcade game by Irem. The player takes the role of a submarine in underwater environments. The game follows the story of a rebel force, piloting newly developed submarines, trying to strike back at the Dark Anarchy Society for the destruction of the planet using a doomsday weapon which melted the polar ice caps, thus flooding most of the world. The game was developed by the team who would go on to create GunForce 2 for Irem and the Metal Slug series for SNK.

First off, good work for keeping up the featured game on the site Muri! Second, this is a great game — the graphics, the explosions, the action, the controls (well controls are less than perfect) — everyone who hasn't tried it must!!

You know those games that you always meant to get at some point, but for some reason you never did.... and then someone mentions one of them 10 - 20 years later and you wonder quite how you missed it....

I've always thought the game looked awesome, I'm sure I'll have a go on it one day.

Never played it, as the idea of submarines never peeked my interest. Besides MAME, is there any way to play this?

I'm sure I have or had this on Playstation (1). I remember playing it for a while and thinking it was good but not outstanding. After that I didn't really go back to it to play it again. Kudos to Irem for trying something different though. I think it's probably quite hard to make an exciting schmup with a slow moving vehicle like a submarine.

I remember a guy was working on this(below) on the Neo Geo dev forum I was on. It's a very early demo but nice work so far Thumbs Up

By the way, has anyone else also noticed that the order of levels was changed for the PSX port? Another case of retrospectively changing a game's difficulty balancing, and a pretty unnecessary one in my opinion. I was quite disappointed when I booted up the PSX version for the first time.

tvtropes.org:
The Playstation version takes you through all the levels in a slightly different order as compared to the arcade version, leaving the Deep Dark Sea as the fifth stage (instead of fourth), the Sunken Town as the fourth (instead of second), and the Ruins as the third (instead of fifth).

Apart from forking out money for a Playstation, Saturn or Windows 95 copy there's still another "legit" way to play the game.

DotEmu, the same guys who brought out several smartphone ports of various Neo Geo games, seemed to have ported In The Hunt into a freeware flash game. There's only one credit, no 2 player mode and it's de facto an emulation as well, but at least it's an option to take a quick glance at the game for free:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/622205

Otherwise the game is also included in DotEmus IREM Arcade Hits anthology with apparently unlimited credits:

http://www.dotemu.com/en/download-game/24/irem-arcade-hits

But to be honest, I find DotEmus ports absolutely awful and half-assed. I'd prefer MAME over their crap everyday - not to mention that technically speaking it's pretty much the same thing. With most of their ports you even end up paying money for a worse emulation... The only reason I'd buy their "official" stuff would be to support the original developers and the holder of rights.

Well, I've tried it only rarely, but In The Hunt was good, I guess, having similarity to Metal Slug and all with the Submarine and stuff.
