Treasure of the Caribbean - Game of the Week
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

A long-sought classic, a hidden gem waiting to be released for the ever hungry SNK community! At least that's what most Neo Geo connoisseurs were thinking about Treasure of the Caribbean before its release in 2011 by Neo Conception International...

So, to brighten up the story behind this rather tragic story let's go back to the year 1994. Developer team FACE, known for Neo Geo titles like Money Puzzle Exchanger or Zupapa, announced their newest Puzzle game in the March volume of the Japanese gaming mag 'Gamest'. The article's editors also presented a couple of screenshots of the game's prototype. Soon after the game sank into obscurity and it was never released officialy by FACE, nor has anyone ever got his hands on the prototype.

Several years elapsed until the French homebrew developer team NCI (short for Neo Conception International) suddenly announced in 2011 that they not only 'found the uncomplete original prototype of Treasure of the Caribbean, they also were going to release as it was supposed to in 1994'! The excitement among the Neo Geo collectors wasn't unfounded, since NCI didn't do such a bad job on Bang Bang Busters before. But things came a bit different than expected; it supposedly turned out that NCI (or more precisely Le Cortex) developed about 90% of the whole game and mainly relied on the ancient screenshot presented in the Gamest magazine from 1994! This caused quite a turmoil and disappointment, read this thread for further details.

Anyway, NCI released the game as AES, MVS and even NGCD version. Although the game has already been dumped, I point out that it still can be officially purchased on various web shops. If anyone is brave enough...

Treasure of the Caribbean

Genre: Puzzle
Players: 2
Size: 120 MEGS
Released on: MVS, AES, NGCD

Brief Description:

A puzzle game designed in 1994 by SNK's 3rd party licensee Face. Face Corporation was rather active in this area of the game list with Gururin and Zupapa. Their 4th and final NEOGEO title was Money Puzzle Exchanger in 1997. First shown at a show in Japan in September of 1994, Treasure of the Caribbean game simply never made it out of the gates.

Never played it, never want to. Sorry I can't add more than that... it looks like a steaming pile of dog shit.

I voted "w00t! Da best puzzlah on da Neo Geo, brah!!" just for shits and giggles.

shot in the eye
shot in the brain
shot in the ass...
I've never played it either, but I've watched videos of it and the music and sound FX are horrid. The game play looks like it's a rip off of Bubble Bath Babes on the NES (another horrid unlicensed video game).
Hey, Bubble Bath Babes is kinda fun!

The uneven bottom of the playing field does make Treasure of the Caribbean look slightly reminiscent of BBB, but otherwise the gameplay looks nearly identical to Puyo Puyo. Either way this isn't a game I would spend exorbitant amounts of money on, especially when there are roughly 4 million different versions of Puyo Puyo already out there. Plus, the Neo Geo isn't exactly hurting for great puzzle games, some of which were also developed by Face.

Can't say first hand though, as I haven't played it. I'm sure I'll try it out through emulation some day out of curiosity.

...It doesn't seem fair that this got an official release and Ghostlop didn't.
Heh, reelmojo I often find our views overlapping. You pretty much said everything I was going to. I never tried it, but I don't need to try it to see what's going on here. Puyo Puyo — or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine here in the West — of course, is a derivative of Columns. I like myself a good puzzle game when it is a unique and addicting concept. Unfortunately, these games I speak of are few and far between. Instead, we get bland cookie cutters like TC. I'll stick with the hybrid Twinkle Star Sprites or card-dispensing Puzzle Link (NGPC). I will have to try Ghostlop now that you mentioned it.

That BBB got me through some lonely nights in college.

Yeah I guess it is more like Puyo Puyo in that regards. But there is nothing captivating about this Caribbean game.
I have this one for NGCD. To be fair it's not terrible and the gameplay works reasonably well but it's just a very very average and rather unexciting game. Why would I want to spend time on this when there are lots of far superior puzzle games I could be playing e.g. Uo Poko, Magical Drop 3, Money Idol Exchanger, Cleopatra Fortune etc.

Graphics are drab and unappealing. It really doesn't look like a Neo Geo game. The way the characters bounce up and down in the background rather than being properly animated looks stupid.
I'm still amazed that of all the talented homebrew and small-time developers who'd likely would have jumped at the chance to make a NeoGeo game, NCI picked the guys behind this.

(my password still works?)

As for the game itself, I must admit I've never witnessed such a blatant ugliness on the Neo Geo. Even the music and gameplay is completely off the charts. Of course, Le Cortex only had less than 1 year development time and therefore did a rushed job, but it's still no excuse for saccing some original AES carts for this garbage.

NGDEV is a shining example how homebrew Neo Geo titles can be actually good, despite the budget and production hurdles these developers face.

To be fair I could make a game that looks much worse than this. But when compared with other Neo games it does look amateurish. I've never really played Puyo Puyo or any of those type of games much. Even if this was good (most people here seem to think it is average at best), a puzzle game isn't really something that's going to get most Neo Geo owners excited.

Maybe this will turn out to be some kind of ultra rare game in the future? I dont imagine many people have bought it on AES
