The King of Fighters 2002 - Game of the Week
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

Back in good 'ol 1998 SNK made massive waves with the release of The King of Fighters '98, which is considered by many fans as the best KoF up to date. Besides the graphics, sounds or gameplay KoF '98 was also exceptional because it was a so called 'Dream Match' installment. A 'Dream Match' title is basically recognizable by including characters who are already dead in the official storyline, offering an extremely competitive gameplay but no official storyline at all.

However, since KoF '99 the franchise became somewhat controversial. Some fans welcomed the so called Striker system while others boycotted the series because of that new feature. Some other Neo Geo followers even wrote off the series since KoF 2001, as that title gave them a dull impression in terms of graphical and accoustic presentation. So in 2002 SNKP and Eolith decided to return to the franchise's roots and to re-include the traditional, popular 3-on-3 system in a second 'Dream Match'...

The King of Fighters 2002

Genre: Fighting
Players: 2
Size: 681 MEGS
Released on: MVS, AES, DC, PS2, XBOX

Brief Description:

The King of Fighters 2002 (Challenge to Ultimate Battle) is the ninth game in the King of Fighters series, and is the second and last King of Fighters game produced by Eolith. Much like The King of Fighters '98, this game is more of a "dream match" for characters from all previous King of Fighters games, including killed-off characters. KOF 2002 discards the 4-on-4 "Striker Match" format used in the previous three games in the series and returns to the 3-on-3 Battle format originally used in the series up until KOF '98.

Definitely a big step up from 2001 (and possibly even 2000) in many aspects. Better character art design, animation, backgrounds, music... Scaling back on the multiple striker system streamlined things a bit in terms of gameplay. Very nice upscaled character roster, too! Thumbs Up

Overall one of the better KOF entries, though I think its sccessor, KOF 2003 outdoes it with its tag team feature and lavish visuals. Though all the series' entries are great fighters, in my book, '95, '98, '99 & 2K3 claim top honors.

Be The Fighter! I have to admit I haven't played it in a while but his is my favourite ever King Of Fighters - out of the 5 I have. It lacks the vibrancy of 98, but in terms of roster and gameplay it's top dog. Really like box artwork and I've always loved the intro too Thumbs Up

If you're looking for KOF on AES or MVS hardware, you simply can't go wrong with this one. It's definitely my favorite NeoGeo KOF. If you don't care what system you're playing KOF on though, go with KOF '02UM. '02 was the last KOF before they started experimenting with tag team play and the classic style definitely went out with a bang. '02UM refines everything that worked about the original and adds more characters. While it's still not my favorite game in the series (KOFXIII gets that honor) or even my second (KOFXI), KOF'02UM comes very highly recommended to anyone with even a remote interest in the series, or fighting games in general.

02 is fine, but 02UM is leagues better with the majority cast overall. :3

Due to the inclusion of Foxy and Lin, I'd have to agree. They're two of my most wanted characters for KOFXIV.

Oswald would definitely be a third.

2002 is my all time KOF 2002. The game-play is top notch, great roster, great move sets. No striker system is a major plus.

Running Wild
2002 sucks because King is just a background character.

Also 2k2 Athena is OP as hell.

Game as a whole is not very balanced, and the music stinks. I'll take 98 anyday, or even 2000.

I'd love the opportunity to play '02 in a Tokyo arcade, but I'd probably get my ass handed to me and walk out with my tail between my legs.

Here is another KOF that I've not had much experience with... just as with KOF01 before I ended up purchasing that one. I can't see myself just going out and buying this one for my AES like I did with '01. Again... eventually I'll have it, but not as quick as I bought '01 after a similar post.

I know I've played it before, and I also remember not being very impressed by it. I think the last KOF that I really enjoyed (on MVS/AES hardware) was 2K.
