Guerrilla War - Game of the Week
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

The late 80's were indeed the era when great movie heroes like John Rambo or John Matrix were the main inspiration for video games. Just take a look at Capcom's Commando, Konami's Contra or SNK's Ikari Warriors, everything was about blasting things up... in an awesome way. However, who thought that SNK would come up with no less a figure than Fidel Castro and Che Guevara as main protagonists for their new Arcade game?! I mean, in a time where Nuclear War with Soviet Russia didn't sound so absurd and Cuba was considered as a bosom buddy of the devils from Moscow?

However, in 1987 SNK released Guerrilla War in the American arcades. The game was known in Japan as "Guevara" and explicitly was about the Cuban revolution with Che Guevara and Fidel Castro as protagonists. In the American version on the other hand, Fidel Castro still can be seen in the game's intro, but the names or places are not mentioned. The game itself is quite a clone of Ikari Warrior, it still uses the same rotary stick controls and even the graphical presentation is quite similar.

If you ever wondered who was responsible for the American boxart of Guerrilla War and other SNK games like P.O.W., you can visit the artist's blog right below. I think his paintings can be considered as display of 80's awesomeness:

Guerrilla War / Guevara

i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x434/Murikov/NGFL%20GOTW/Guerrilla%20War/guerrillacover_zpsf451c002.jpg

Genre: Run 'n Gun
Players: 2
Size: n/a
Released on: Arcade, Amstrad CPC, C64, NES, ZX Spectrum, PSN

Brief Description:

Guerrilla War (originally titled in Japan as Guevara) is an overhead run 'n gun game produced by SNK. Originally released for arcades in 1987 as a coin-operated arcade game, Guerrilla War followed the adventures of two unnamed rebel commandos (Che Guevara and Fidel Castro in the Japanese version) as they raid an unnamed Caribbean Island in order to free it from the rule of an unnamed tyrannical dictator. Along the way the players vanquish hordes of unnamed enemy soldiers while attempting to rescue hostages (with large score deductions for any hostages killed in the crossfire), collecting weapons from troopers and operating tanks.

Yes, run 'n' gun! SNK sure liked that rotary stick, didn't they (I don't think it will be quite doable on MAME)? I never encountered GW in the arcades, but I have tried the NES port. It is a total twitch shooter, but perhaps worth shits and giggles done co-op. I found it funny how there are seemingly unlimited continues in that version (you will definitely need them). Nice find with the original artist's web page. Smile

I didn't know this game until I read about it in my recently purchased book 1001 games you must play before you die. Nice to see some more information about it, I'm not familiar with SNK's work outside their ground arcade/AES/MVS.

I may throw down a score on this one. I never play it, but I did pick it up for $4.00 the other day and it's just coincidence that it's featured here now.

It's actually quite easy to define the rotary controls of the original rom version, I explained it back then with Bermuda Triangle:

This is an important point, as you control the very important gun turret with the rotary stick. But it's no problem if you're playing on MAME, just configure 'Positional Analog Dec' and 'Positional Analog Inc' in the Game Input settings of MAME (look at picture below).

With Guerrilla War it's the same, just define 'Positional Analog Dec' and 'Positional Analog Inc' for moving the virtual rotary controller left or right.

But if you prefer the much easier 'Shock Troopers controls setting', there's even a hacked rom version called gwarb.zip (you need the main rom to play it). In that rom version you don't need to configure these rotary controls, so the game character can be controlled normally without rotating. Much more pleasant if you ask me. Smile

Whoo, we've got a participant for a High Score Challenge. Headbang I think I'll jump on the bandwagon as well. Priest will get informed!

I really can't post a vote on this one.

I used to love playing this game in the arcades back in the day, but I don't know how much I would enjoy it now. I may have to try it out sometime soon... and if there is a HSC on it. Well maybe I'll just have to take up that challenge too.

@Murikov did not know either of those facts, thanks!
