Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer - Game of the Week
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

So, do you remember Technos Japan, the developer behind the awesome Kunio-Kun series? After the fighting game version of Double Dragon on the Neo Geo, in 1995 they went for a second attempt on SNK's arcade platform. In collaboration with mangaka Masami Obari (better known for the Fatal Fury OVAs) they released another fighting game under the rather tongue twisting name Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Although the game wasn't quite popular for being an excellent Neo Geo title, the game was ported to the PSX and even a three-episode OVA was produced.

Well, I can't tell much about this game as it's quite an obscure Neo Geo title, but from judging the game's character designs at least I can't deny it offers some fanservice... Yummy

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer

Genre: Fighting
Players: 2
Size: 186 MEGS
Released on: MVS, AES, NGCD, PSX

Brief Description:

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer is a 1995 superhero-themed fighting game produced by Technos Japan Corp. for the Neo Geo arcade and home console. It was the company's second attempt at a fighting game, following the Neo Geo fighting game version of Double Dragon. Ports of the game were released for the Neo-Geo CD and the PlayStation. One of the game's features is when a player defeats an opponent, the winner will have a certain special move taken from the opponent as well.

I never could get into that game. I thought the art style was horrid and the game just is not that fun.
I'm sure I'll be in the minority here but I've always liked Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Not
suggesting it's one of the best fighters on the system or anything and perhaps the gameplay could have been a bit faster but for me it's pretty fun. There are plenty of cool looking special and super moves and there is scope for doing combos. Masami Obari's character designs appeal to me especially Karin with her cloud and replica attacks and Kyosuke with his ability to summon animal spirits. It's a very original idea that when you defeat an opponent you can learn one of their moves or even gain an enhanced version of an existing move if you win a mirror match. Personally I like the art style in the game.

The arranged soundtrack is excellent with many tracks having vocals and a new ending
song was included. You can check out the tracks in the NGFL jukebox.

Has anyone here tried the PlayStation port? Never tried it myself but I heard the inputs
of some special moves were changed and that there's an issue with slowdown.

Gowcaizer's arranged theme:

Yeah! Funny when I these days are on the hunt for this game for my MVS system this shows up as the game of the week Grin I really want this game so bad I dream about it at night...! Pray I'm totally into the obscure fighting genre and this looks like just something for me. The graphics and backgrounds looks really good and set the mood right for a fantasy superhero themed fighter!

Is it true that the engine is from Art Of Fighting or did i misunderstood something?
My youtube channel:
I can't really say I've played this, as I only messed around with it for less than five minutes a few years ago. I should though, as I am going through a Technos phase at the moment. On a side note, I'd really like to know the history of this company, and perhaps see some interviews of the main designers. They seem like a really curious bunch.

Murikov, I've been wanting to tell you the screenshots you choose for GOTW (to be on the homepage) always elicit interest. (This is special to me, as the main way to garner interest in gamers in the nineties was screenshots in magazines — you recapture that interest in me)

I must give Voltage Fighter a proper play next weekend, it sure looks more fun than certain other Neo Geo titles. As for the character design I'd say it's fine, although I don't like Masami Obari's drawing style that much. I always thought the Fatal Fury OVAs should have been designed by somebody else, but who cares now...

The OST/AST doesn't sound bad either, especially the OST version of Gowcaizer's Theme is quite catchy. As being someone who places value on a well produced soundtrack, I'd like to play the game all the more.

Nice that you noticed my image selections so far, thanks! In general I pick the most appealing screenshot for the GOTW preview panel, for example artwork from openings. And what could be more appealing than Karin's rear view in this case?
